Gardeners Eastcote Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Eastcote is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our aims, responsibilities and procedures for managing risk across all services, including garden maintenance, landscaping, lawn care and related works in private and commercial outdoor spaces.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan and deliver gardening work, from routine maintenance to more complex projects. We strive to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry guidance applicable to gardening and grounds maintenance services.
Responsibilities and Duty of Care
Ultimate responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Gardeners Eastcote. Management is responsible for:
Ensuring appropriate health and safety arrangements are in place and kept up to date. Providing suitable information, instruction and supervision so that work can be carried out safely. Supplying and maintaining equipment and personal protective equipment that is safe and fit for purpose. Allocating sufficient resources to manage health and safety effectively.
Employees are responsible for:
Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Following all safety procedures, site rules and training provided. Using tools, machinery and protective equipment correctly and reporting defects immediately. Reporting hazards, near misses, incidents and injuries without delay.
We also expect clients and site controllers to cooperate with us in ensuring safe access, clear communication and suitable coordination where multiple contractors are present.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work, we consider the nature of the gardening tasks, the site layout and any specific local conditions. Where appropriate, formal risk assessments are carried out and recorded. These assessments identify hazards such as uneven ground, working at height, exposure to chemicals, noise, manual handling, sharp tools and powered machinery.
Based on the assessment, we put in place safe systems of work, including:
Planning work to minimise risks to staff, clients and the public. Establishing exclusion zones where necessary when using powered machinery. Scheduling more hazardous activities at suitable times to reduce interaction with others. Ensuring that only trained and competent personnel carry out particular tasks.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Eastcote provides appropriate health and safety training for all employees relevant to their roles. This may include induction training, safe use of hand tools and power tools, manual handling techniques, use of lawn mowers and hedge trimmers, safe storage and application of garden chemicals, and awareness of noise and vibration risks.
Staff are supervised in line with their experience and the level of risk associated with the work. Only competent, authorised team members operate specialist equipment or undertake higher risk activities such as working at height or using powered cutting machinery.
Tools, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening tools and machinery used by Gardeners Eastcote are selected, maintained and inspected to ensure they are safe and suitable. Defective equipment is taken out of service immediately until repaired or replaced. Guards, safety devices and manufacturers instructions are always followed.
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, personal protective equipment is provided and must be used as instructed. Depending on the task, this may include protective gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, and respiratory protection. PPE is stored properly and replaced as necessary.
Chemical and Environmental Safety
When using garden chemicals such as fertilisers, weed control products or treatments for pests and diseases, Gardeners Eastcote follows product guidance and relevant safety data. Chemicals are stored securely, transported safely and applied in a way that minimises risk to people, pets, wildlife and the wider environment.
We aim to use environmentally responsible methods wherever possible, including non-chemical controls and careful selection of products appropriate for the site. Waste materials such as green waste, packaging and residual chemicals are managed and disposed of responsibly in line with applicable environmental requirements.
Public Safety and Site Protection
Much of our work takes place in gardens and outdoor areas that may remain accessible to residents, visitors or passers-by. We take steps to ensure public safety by clearly identifying active work areas, using barriers or warning signs where appropriate, keeping access routes clear, and securing tools and machinery when not in use.
We take care to protect property, plants, structures and services such as underground utilities. Any potential damage, obstruction or disruption is discussed with the client in advance wherever possible.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences are reported to management as soon as possible. Details are recorded and investigated to identify root causes and lessons to be learned. Where required, incidents are reported to the relevant authorities in line with legal obligations.
First aid resources appropriate to the nature of gardening work are made available. Staff are briefed on what to do in an emergency, including how to summon assistance, secure the site and prevent further harm.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Eastcote regularly reviews health and safety performance, taking into account incident reports, staff feedback, site observations and updates to legal or industry requirements. This Health and Safety Policy and associated procedures are reviewed periodically and revised where necessary to ensure they remain effective and appropriate to the services we provide.
By working together, following procedures and maintaining awareness of potential hazards, we aim to ensure that gardening work is carried out safely and responsibly for everyone involved.
